Code of Conduct
- Always arrive clean and tidy, schools prefer you not to wear jeans or clothes with any large or unsuitable logo.
The school will advise you if they wish you to dress more formally.
- Never remain in the classroom without a teacher present – if the teacher leaves for whatever reason, you leave too. A condition of the Scheme for schools and Local Education Authorities is that you are not left alone with pupils.
- Do not touch the children except where it is essential in order to carry out the duties you have been asked to do.
- Do not allow the children to become too attached to you or have favourites – be friendly and understanding, whilst always behaving in an adult and responsible manner. Remember you are there as a member of staff.
- Do not discipline the children – that is for the teacher to do. Never contradict the teacher in front of the pupils.
- Never agree to accept information from a child in confidence or promise to keep it secret, this information could be important for the teacher to know.
- Anything you hear in the school staff room is confidential and should not be discussed with anyone – not even a fellow student.
- Turn your mobile phone off while in school and do not take photographs, either with cameras or phones, whilst
at the school.
- If you need to report anything of concern regarding Child Protection issues you should contact your class teacher or the designated safeguarding contact at your school. You should do this immediately and before you leave the school. You should also inform the Students in Schools Co-ordinator.
- Sign in and out by scanning the QR code in the school reception. You will also need to sign the school’s visitor book. The school’s book alone is insufficient to provide evidence of your visits so signing both is essential.
- You should let the school know in plenty of time if you are unable to attend one of your sessions and let them know when they will see you next. Also, make sure that they are aware when you are making your final visit and when you log out on your final visit, make sure that you tick the appropriate box.
- If you have any concerns or problems which you cannot resolve at the school, speak to the Students in Schools
Co-ordinator.
- Do not have any contact with a pupil other than as a tutor during your school visit. Do not name the school
you visit, its teachers or pupils, on any social networking site.
