3. Mentor Module 1 – Related Academic Reading. Please read the two articles linked here, considering the questions listed. NB. This is referred content so not applicable if you have been given an exemption.
- The importance of a learning culture for teacher motivation (9 minute read)
- Cognitive load theory and teacher expertise: specific challenges for primary teachers (9 minute read)
- Autonomy can be one of the harder things for a trainee teacher to feel. How can we create opportunities for it?
- What are the benefits of a coaching model over more directive discussion?
- How can we reduce cognitive load for trainee teachers teaching subject content that was unfamiliar to them until they were assigned that lesson to teach?
4. Curriculum Familiarisation Video (November). Please access the 45 minute screencast below. It should be watched in conjunction with reading of the two handbooks mentioned (Year 1 School Experience Handbook (serial) 2024-25 and Year 1 Mentor Handbook (serial) 2024-25) both of which can be accessed by clicking the ‘back’ button at the top of this page and selecting the ‘documentation’ page.
5. Reflective meeting with ITTCo (December or January). Meet with your school ITTCo to discuss how your RPTs have settled in. In particular, discuss how very new trainees like your Year 1s can be supported, as well as any individual training needs you anticipate.

7. Mentor Module 2: Reflective Conversations (March). Please access and watch the 45 minute screencast below.

- Teachers as Learners | Leeds Beckett University (5 minute read)
- Reflect on the benefits of the three different coaching approaches outlined. Which will suit your RPTs best?
- How can we support RPTs to engage in ‘deliberate practice’? What are the barriers to this within a school timetable and how might they be overcome?
- Lofthouse discusses the need for teachers’ learning to be ‘authentic’, i.e. awake to the tensions of the role. What tensions might your RPT encounter in the area of classroom management and how could you help them learn from them?

11. Mentor Module 3 – Related Reading. Please read through the Initial Teacher Training Early Career Framework (ITTECF) to ensure you are familiar with the evidence-based practice it is advocating and that might inform the targets that you write.
