This image summarises my thesis’s central issue, which is the study of the visual identity of the Brazilian Northeast seen through the work of art direction in films made in Pernambuco. The state of Pernambuco is one of the richest in Brazil and, at the same time, one of the most neglected by public power. The films I study show a new cultural and visual identity developed from the mid-1990s film production, which shed light on the city’s overlooked and marginalised spaces and population.
